Are You in Control?

Recently when I started seeing a massage therapist, her first comment was "Wow, you are usually in control." Funny thing is that I have always considered myself to be very passive, a people pleaser. I thought that is what gave me most of the stress in my life. Not being able to please everyone & be happy myself.

Truth is that I like to have control of most things. I manage my home, the finances, kids, have a stressful job, and help make the major decisions. After a lot of thought - I really do like control. I think this is the source of a lot of my stress.

The desire for control really made the anxiety & panic hard to handle. I could not control it. It had a mind of it's own & took over anytime it felt like it. You see my anxiety is like a stealth being that can slip around and change how I feel in an instant. Panicked, hiding in a closet - or a nervous cat tied in a knot. I did not like being out of control. The more I fought it the worse I got. I thought one day I would just drop dead. Sound familiar?

Today I am working really hard to "live in the moment", and soften my control. It's not easy, but a work in progress. Babysteps right? My kids can tell you that I am more fun to be around now.

Are you fighting for control? Try letting go just a little, you might be surprised at the results.

Wishing you all the best,
Amy

***3 days Sugar Free for me - Are you ready for the Sugar Free Challenge?

Quote of the Day

March Challenge - Sugar Free!

Are you addicted?
Constantly looking for your next sugary treat?

Did you know that sugar can:

·Vitamins and minerals can be stolen in attempt to process the sugar, depletion of your B Vitamins.

· Cause Weight Gain

· Give You Fluctuating Blood Sugar

· Increase Mood Changes

· Increase Nervousness

· Increase Loss of Concentration

· Increase PMS

· Suppress the Immune System

· Increase Anxiety & Depression Symptoms

·Make you more prone to panic attacks & increase them if you are already suffering

Ready to give it up yet, or at least cut down?

For March we are going to start the Great Sugar Free Challenge. Don't get freaked out just yet. You know your limits, but I would love for you to go 30 days without sugary drinks or sweets. Test yourself!

With that said, you know I am not a big fan of Artificial Sweeteners. I have been tinkering around with the new products on the market. Stevia is getting great reports and my local grocery store has started selling PureVia. It is all natural stevia & packaged in small to-go packets. I have used it in coffee and tea, I think it tastes great & not too expensive. It is great for diabetics too! Here is the website if you would like to check it out http://www.purevia.com/

I have found that the sugar withdrawals last about 3 days. Fruit is a great replacement. The fiber in the fruit balances out all the sugar - just don't overdo it. Make sure you note your eating habits in your Daily Healing Journal. Over the month you will really notice a change in how you are feeling.

Need to be held accountable? Make sure you are signed up for our Spark Team. I enter my food every night - during the day I keep track of it in my Daily Healing journal. If you would rather not use your ink, we have them available in the Egg Store or you can download the free PDF here.

** If you want that piece of cake, eat it! This is all a new habit of letting go of the sugar & learning not to depend on it. Moderation is the key. A few bites - not the whole pie :)
Have any questions or need support? I am always available to you - amy@thehatchedegg.com

Wishing you all the best,

Get Centered

What does "being centered" mean to you? What image does it bring to mind? For me I see a woman in a yoga pose able to relax and be perfectly still.

Though all of the anxiety, panic, depression & stress that is one thing that I never felt - centered. I think off- balanced is a good term. The big question is how to achieve that.

A great start is to make your health your hobby. Get really excited about the idea of feeling better.

Some great ideas to help you feel a little more centered are:

· Take up yoga

· Work on your breathing exercises

· Listen to meditation CDS

· Take a walk daily, just enjoy your surroundings

· Exercise, get those chemicals flowing

· Eliminate the sugar and caffeine from your diet - no more diet related roller coasters

· Journal

· Read - Inspirational or Daily Devotionals

Remember how important you are. Once you make small changes - you will start to see big improvements.

Wishing you all the best,

It's Saturday!

What are you doing today?

I love Saturday. It's a day I try to chill out a little & make my plan for the week.

Are you treating yourself right today? Maybe watching a favorite movie, calling a friend, or cooking your favorite dinner. I love to have spa night Saturday Night. Sometimes my husband likes to pamper himself as well, although he wouldn't admit it.

Today you might want to:
· Plan your meals to ensure that you are able to stay away from cookies and snacks.
· Check to make sure the laundry is done for this week. Helps to reduce stress in the morning.
· Check you budget. Make sure all of this week's bills are paid.
· Double check those calendars. Nothing worse than missing a conference. Can't tell you how many times I have done that.

Tonight:
· Pamper yourself
· Make sure you are filling out the Daily Healing Journal.
· Work on your Gratitude Journal.
· Relax

All of this will help you from feeling overwhelmed & lower stress. My anxiety level really increased when I feel like my life is out of control. Have a great week!

Are you Eating your Veggies?

It is really amazing to learn that the average restaurant meal is approximately three times the size of the recommended portion. It kind of makes me laugh when my husband and I split a meal & the waitress gives us a look like we are cheap. The plates are just huge!!!

The recommended portion size for your dinner plate should be 1/2 veggies & salad, 1/4 lean protein, 1/4 whole grains.

Are veggies usually on your plate? If not it's a great idea to start now. Veggies are a great source for the vitamins and minerals we need. Most of us are not getting enough. Last time I checked McDonald's didn't have Green Beans on their menu. Make sure the days that you cook at home you make the most of it. Frozen veggies are a great way to to save on cost too.

Here are the big veggies at my house:

Brussels Sprouts: Full of Vitamin C, folate and iron. With Phytochemicals that have anti-cancer effects.
(We steam or boil these & add a little butter & Garlic Salt)

Asparagus: Stimulate immunity. Full of vitamin E & folate.
(Great grilled with Olive Oil - Salt & Pepper)

Spinach: High in potassium and folate. May reduce cancer risk and relieve anemia. May also protect from heart disease.
(I love to heat a little olive oil in my wok with garlic & toss in the spinach. Cook until wilted.)

Red Bell Peppers: Excellent source of Vitamin C. May reduce the risk of Heart Disease.
(We use these as taco shells in our house. Cut tops off the pepper - boil in water for 10 minutes until tender - add cooked taco meat & top with cheese & salsa.)

Tomatoes: Lots of anti-oxidants. May reduce the risk of heart attack. Great source of Vitamin C & E.
(Slice these up into circles - place on cooking sheet - add fresh basil , sprinkle with garlic salt and top with mozzarella cheese - place in the broiler until cheese is melted.)

You just really have to change the way you look at food if you are focused on eating healthy & becoming healthy.

Try and shop on the outside aisles of your grocery store. All the processed box foods can be found in the middle.

Strong body....Strong mind!

Wishing you all the best,
Amy

Pennies from Heaven

I received this email today & thought it would make a great story for the Egg Note. Hope you are having a peaceful day!

Pennies from Heaven
You always hear the usual stories of pennies on the sidewalk being good luck, gifts from angels, etc. This is the first time I've ever heard this twist on the story. Gives you something to think about.

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house.
The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking 20 steps slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment.

Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny.

He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?

Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer.. She casually mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value.

A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?

'Look at it.' He said. 'Read what it says.' She read the words ' United States of America ''No, not that; read further.''One cent?' 'No, keep reading.''In God we Trust?' 'Yes!' 'And?''And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, 'In God We Trust,' and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message.

It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful! And, God is patient..

Thought for the Day:
God didn't promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain, but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way. Read this line very slowly and let it sink in...

If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

Wishing you all the best,
Amy

Roll with the Punches

Gotta Roll With the Punches!

Ever feel like no matter what you do everything seems to be flying at you faster than you can duck? I know I do.

I have found that what really helps me. I don't look at everything that's going wrong, I break it down into small things I can handle. If it's something I have no control over I often write about it in my journal to help get it out of my head. If it's something that I need to address I break it down on a list & handle one piece at a time. I can get easily overwhelmed.

My friends know that I will often give a Christmas ornament when they are facing a hard time, with a note that reads "It will be better by Christmas". No matter where you are in the year at least you have a vision point. It could be attached to any date. It helps open just a little bit of light.

Just know we will all hit the dark and trying times. If you want to be low stress, low anxiety, and happy - it's all about learning to handle those challenges.

Have other tips on how to handle everything coming at you? Come post a comment on our blog, we would love to hear from you.

Wishing you all the best,

Picture This

Do you have an idea of how you would like to live your life? Feel a little envious when you see people going through their days with no worries?

I remember having jealous feelings of people who could plan a vacation, or take a risk, or just go to the store without a worry. They had no idea the turmoil I had going on inside. Just traveling across town was a major ordeal for me.

Something that really helped me with my outlook was making a plan of where I wanted to be. I set goals of small things I wanted to achieve. I created a vision board for myself by cutting images out of a magazine and taping them on a sheet of paper. I placed this right beside my bed so that in the morning it was the first thing I looked at and one of the last things before I closed my eyes. Many nights when I couldn't sleep I would play a movie in my head of my life when I was anxiety free. At that point I had decided that it was all a matter of when, not if. I was determined to live a free life.

My board consisted of a giant smile, a fit woman, happy family, happy driver, money (for a job), and what ever I needed to focus on at that time. As I acheived a goal a new image would appear. I would actually see myself in these images.

I still practice this method everyday. It really helps you become optimistic. At that time in my life, I didn't see a future a head of me at all...only darkness.

This project doesn't have to cost you a dime & can really help a lot. Grab some magazines and have fun with a little cut and paste.

Let me know what's on your vision board.

Wishing you all the best,
Amy

Sleep & Inositol

Hatch Into Health
with Patrice McArthy, R.N. B.S.N.

Hello Amy's Peeps,

Are you getting enough sleep Peeps? Deep sleep? If you're like most humans the answer is probably no. There are so many detrimental side effects of sleep deprivation and science is learning more about this all the time. I'm sure you are aware of it's effect on your mood and your stress and anxiety levels. But did you know that nutritional deficiencies can also play a role?

Calcium, magnesium, essential fatty acids, B vitamins, iron and folate all play a role in healthy hormone production and a deficiency in these nutrients can interfere with healthy sleeping patterns. I love the nutrient Inositol as well. Inositol helps maintain a healthy serotonin level (the feel good chemical in your brain). It has a relaxing effect and can be useful in the treatment of depression, anxiety and panic, agoraphobia and obsessive compulsive disorder. It can be taken safely with anti-depressant medications as well (*reference below ). It is found in both plant and animal sources but often our diets don't provide adequate therapeutic amounts.

Signs of inadequate inositol intake include:
Difficulty falling asleep
PMS, fibroid tumors, and other problems caused by female hormonal imbalances
Depression
Anxiety

TAKING INOSITOL
For general health, a more restful sleep, and an overall positive outlook, start with ½ teaspoon of inositol powder per day. For promoting female hormonal balance, one teaspoon or more per day is helpful. For relieving depression, anxiety, agoraphobia, OCD and panic attacks, 1-4 teaspoons should be used. (**) Inositol powder has a naturally sweet, pleasant taste and mixes easily in water.

Please email me with any questions or concerns at Patrice@thehatchedegg.com

Have a restful night and by all means have a nap!

Posture Check

Are you sitting up straight? Is that breath able to get deep in your belly?

Did you know that deep belly breathing will move the oxygen through the blood & help the lymphatic system move the toxins out? If your lymphatic system is slow or sluggish it could cause weight gain, muscle loss, high blood pressure, fatigue, and inflammation.

A few years ago I realized that I am a very shallow breather. In times of stress I often hold my breath. That really messes up your body function. You are not getting enough oxygen & enough carbon dioxide is not going out. This can cause fatigue and brain fog. Deep breathing from the belly can start the relaxation response that will fight anxiety, stress and depression. I am not sure why but as I breathe deeper it will signal my sinuses to start draining. Less congestion is a great thing!

Didn't know that breathing was so important did you? We have to make sure a few times a day we are focused on our breathing. In through the nose very slow, all the way to the bottom of our stomach and out the mouth. It amazes me that after 10 of these breaths how much better I feel. I wonder what would happen if it was an all time habit?

New research is also showing that better posture helps lessen the symptoms of depression. If you are folded over it's not a very positive position either. If you want to tackle the day you have to be ready and not slouched to the floor. I personally feel happier when I walk with my posture in a straight line. Might just be me, but I feel very sad when I am all dropped over. Stand in a mirror and just see the difference from the side and front. It's amazing how empowered you feel when you are standing up straight.

Check on yourself every so often. Maybe as you fall asleep tonight focus on your deep breathing before you drift off, I will be. And as you walk tomorrow do a self check to make sure you are walking with those shoulders back.

Your Mother Always Told You to Sit Up Straight!
I notice that when I sit at my computer I have a bad habit of slouching. Doing this folds my chest and makes it very hard to get the full belly breath that we need. Messes up all of my chemicals.

Next time you are surfing the web, make sure that you are sitting up straight. This is also a good time to practice those breathing exercises. Move that oxygen all around!

Wishing you all the best,
Amy

Celebrate Yourself!

Celebrate You!

When was the last time you did something for yourself? Today is Valentine's Day. I have received many emails this morning about how our other peeps are spending their Valentine's. Funny thing is most are talking about what they are planning to do for themselves. I am so happy to hear this!

Whether you have someone special in your life, or you are the someone special - you should celebrate! Make sure you do something special, just for you. If you don't have time tonight - put yourself on the calendar this week.

· Could be a favorite meal
· A new purchase
· Favorite book
· Spa treatment

My Valentine's Night is a quiet night at home, take-out, movie & a box of chocolates with my family. We are avoiding the crowds & just doing what we love. However, I will seek off in a while for quiet time in the bath (with some lavender soap), cotton jammies & a new book I checked out at the library yesterday. Doesn't have to cost anything to take care of yourself. Celebrate you, you really deserve it.

Happy Valentine's Day, you are so important to me. Please send me a note and let me know how you are.

Wishing you all the best,
Amy

Don't Sweat It!

Sometimes it's the little things in our day that can really build up. One by one they creep in and if you don't address them & choose how you are going to handle it, you are just asking for a melt down.

I have learned that there are somethings that are worth going to battle for, but the majority is not worth stressing over. Sometimes a deep breath and counting to 10 helps relieve that immediate stress. Look and see if it's something you could laugh over rather than getting upset.

Something to keep in mind - the people around you will not always remember the kind words you use, but will remember the harsh ones.

Your journal is a great place to release some of that stress. Do keep in mind that you might want to be careful with it in print. It can end up in the wrong hands.

Amaze yourself - Let it go!

Need to vent? Feel free to email me or post in the forum.

Deep Sleep

Hatch Into Health
with Patrice McArthy, R.N. B.S.N.

Hi Peeps,

Are you sleeping? Deeply sleeping? Seriously, who gets enough sleep in our stress-filled lives? Very few of us I'm afraid. Most of us can use a little help here. In your journey toward freedom from anxiety it is critical that you give your body the rest it needs to rebuild and repair.

Fact: our bodies produce a hormone called melatonin that moderates our "circadian" (day/night) biological rhythms. These hormone levels decrease with age and stress.
Fact: this necessary hormone is synthesized in the human body, mostly in the brain, by the pineal gland from precursors as shown below:

Tryptophan ---> 5-HTP --->Serotonin --- > Melatonin

The above is the ideal pathway to reach optimal melatonin levels so I recommend trying to get your body to produce it's own melatonin naturally. This can be accomplished by eating a balanced diet, healthy supplementation with core nutrients (multi-vitamin, calcium + magnesium together, and essential fatty acids or fish oils) to help balance hormones, and correcting lifestyle factors like those listed below.

The following factors may reduce melatonin production at any age:

Lifestyle· Poor sleeping habits: going to bed too late, sleeping during the day· Inadequate darkness during the night (lamps, clocks, street lighting)· Insufficient exposure to natural light during the daytime and too much time spent indoors· Excessive mental stress, high adrenaline and/or cortisol at night· High caffeine or alcohol consumption too close to bed time

Diet and supplements· Inadequate brain availability of precursors such as tryptophan or serotonin, (stressful states or high protein/low carbohydrate diets)· Inadequate availability of cofactors necessary for serotonin and melatonin synthesis: vitamin B6, SAM-e, iron and folate
· Medications - benzodiazepines, beta-blockers, loop diuretics, aspirin.

How to take Melatonin for Sleep:Supplemental melatonin was shown in studies to help with falling asleep when taken about 30 min before the desired sleep time. The most common dose found effective for sleep was 3 mg.*

5-HTP can be used in conjunction with melatonin, as a precursor to serotonin, which can support further endogenous melatonin production during the night to help with staying asleep.*

And, your grandmother was right - tryptophan is the sleepy substance in turkey and milk so try a bit of these foods before bed.

Sooo sleepy peeps, try the simplest solution first and work on your lifestyle habits. But, if more help is needed you can try supplementing with Melatonin.

To your sleep!

Don't be Frustrated!

Are you working hard on getting rid of the Anxiety/Stress symptoms? Are you feeling a little frustrated because you feel like some days you are taking steps backward? Please don't.

This journey did not start last night, not last week, or last month. It is going to take time. The only thing is that you have to make the commitment to try and not give up. I know, it's not a magic pill - it will take some time. But little by little if you makes simple lifestyle changes you will see results.

You will have bad days ahead, but those are a great test to the steps you have taken already. Those bad days might be handled better than the ones you had before.

Patrice (Hatch into Health) made a suggestion today. When we write in our journals we should add a few things that went right today. That will help us focus on the positive. Maybe it's No Panic Attacks Today, I Ate Healthy, Was Able to Call Someone, Found Time to Relax. Does not have to be a big event, just something special to you.

Remember, you are here because you want freedom. Have faith you will find it. Probably when you least expect it.

I am alway here if you need someone to talk to. Email me directly at amy@thehatchedegg.com

Wishing you all the best,
Amy

New Study of Splenda Reveals Shocking Information
About Potential Harmful Effects
James Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health, has expressed shock and outrage after reading a new report from scientists outlining the dangers of the artificial sweetener Splenda (sucralose).

In animals examined for the study, Splenda reduced the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50 percent, increased the pH level in the intestines, contributed to increases in body weight and affected P-glycoprotein (P-gp) levels in such a way that crucial health-related drugs could be rejected.

The P-gp effect could result in medications used in chemotherapy, AIDS treatment and treatments for heart conditions being shunted back into the intestines, rather than being absorbed by the body.

According to Turner, "The report makes it clear that the artificial sweetener Splenda and its key component sucralose pose a threat to the people who consume the product. Hundreds of consumers have complained to us about side effects from using Splenda and this study ... confirms that the chemicals in the little yellow package should carry a big red warning label."

Sources:
Globe Newswire September 28, 2008
Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health Part A 2008;71(21):1415-29

Dr. Mercola's Comments:
It's very important to realize that Splenda (sucralose) is actually NOT sugar, despite its marketing slogan "Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar". Rather it's a chlorinated artificial sweetener in line with aspartame and saccharin, and with detrimental health effects to match.
Splenda was approved by the FDA in 1998 as a tabletop sweetener and for use in products such as baked goods, nonalcoholic beverages, chewing gum, frozen dairy desserts, fruit juices, and gelatins. Sucralose is also permitted as a general-purpose sweetener for all processed foods.
The approval was given after the FDA supposedly reviewed more than 110 animal and human safety studies, but as you'll soon find out, out of these 110 studies, only two were human studies, and the longest one was conducted for four days!

There's overwhelming evidence that consuming artificial sweeteners will likely wreak havoc on your body. Previous news has centered mainly around artificial sweeteners' ability to impair your appetite regulation and leading to weight gain.

For example, it's been discovered that diet soda increases your risk of metabolic syndrome and, ultimately, heart disease. However, the study mentioned above, published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, found even further disturbing news besides weight gain.

Splenda:
reduces the amount of good bacteria in your intestines by 50 percent
increases the pH level in your intestines, and
affects a glycoprotein in your body that can have crucial health effects, particularly if you're on certain medications

They also found unmistakable evidence that Splenda is absorbed by fat, contrary to previous claims.

It's truly disturbing that Splenda can destroy up to 50 percent of your healthy intestinal bacteria, as these bacteria help maintain your body's overall balance of friendly versus unfriendly micro-organisms, and support your general health. Many people are already deficient in healthy bacteria due to choosing highly processed foods. This is why a high quality probiotic is one of the very few supplements I highly recommend for nearly everyone.

The Diet Fallacy
The belief that consuming artificially sweetened foods and drinks will help you to lose or maintain weight is a carefully orchestrated deception. So if you are still opting for diet choices for this reason, please understand that you have been sorely misled. In reality, these diet foods and drinks can cause serious distortions in your biochemistry and ruin your body's ability to control calories. As a matter of fact, it's been shown that diet soft drinks can double your risk of obesity!

Nearly a decade ago, studies were already revealing that artificial sweeteners can:
Stimulate your appetite
Increase carbohydrate cravings
Stimulate fat storage and weight gain
Unfortunately, most public health agencies and nutritionists in the United States still recommend these toxic artificial sweeteners as an acceptable alternative to sugar.
Now, I am definitely not a fan of sugar, but if I had to choose between sugar and any artificial sweetener, I would choose sugar, hands down, without question. I strongly believe artificial sweeteners are even more dangerous to your health than an excess of sugar.

The Health Dangers of Splenda
According to James Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health: "This report followed accepted policies and procedures and the results make clear the potential for disturbing side effects from the ingestion of Splenda.
It is like putting a pesticide in your body. And this is at levels of intake erroneously approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

A person eating two slices of cake and drinking two cups of coffee containing Splenda would ingest enough sucralose to affect the P-glycoprotein, while consuming just seven little Splenda packages reduces good bacteria."

The web site http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=sbx9uxcab.0.0.kmyfvncab.0&ts=S0383&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.truthaboutsplenda.com%2F&id=preview lists a variety of consumer complaints from Splenda consumption, such as:
Gastrointestinal problems
Migraines
Seizures
Dizziness
Blurred vision
Allergic reactions
Blood sugar increases
Weight gain

My site also contains a long list of personal testimonials from readers who have suffered side effects from Splenda. In fact, we have more people on our site that have reported adverse reactions to Splenda than were formally studied in the research submitted for FDA approval!
The symptoms are so numerous I can't include them all here, but the following are common symptoms, usually noticed within a 24-hour period following consumption of Splenda products:
Skin -- Redness, itching, swelling, blistering, weeping, crusting, rash, eruptions, or hives (itchy bumps or welts). These are the most common allergic symptoms that people have.
Lungs -- Wheezing, tightness, cough, or shortness of breath.
Head -- Swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, or throat; headaches and migraines (severe headaches).
Nose -- Stuffy nose, runny nose (clear, thin discharge), sneezing.
Eyes -- Red (bloodshot), itchy, swollen, or watery.
Stomach -- Bloating, gas, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody diarrhea.
Heart -- Palpitations or fluttering.
Joints -- Joint pains or aches.
Neurological -- Anxiety, dizziness, spaced-out sensation, depression.
Beware - You Could be Consuming Splenda Without Your Knowledge

You also need to be aware of the fact that although the bulk of Splenda is sold to processed food manufacturers and soft drink bottlers, it could turn up in your medicine as well, as nearly 10 percent of all sucralose is sold to drug companies.

Many times sucralose (Splenda) will not be listed in the drug information, so there simply is no way you would know you are consuming a potentially dangerous artificial sweetener. However, if you experience any of the symptoms above even though you're avoiding Splenda and other artificial sweeteners, then it may be worth investigating the ingredients of any medications you're taking as well.

Splenda Has NEVER Been Proven Safe for Human Consumption
As of 2006, only six human trials have been published on Splenda. Of these six trials, only two of the trials were completed and published before the FDA approved sucralose for human consumption, and the two published trials had a grand total of 36 total human subjects.
36 people sure doesn't sound like many, but wait, it gets worse: only 23 total were actually given sucralose for testing, and here is the real kicker -- The longest trial at this time had lasted only four days, and looked at sucralose in relation to tooth decay, not human tolerance.

Even more shocking, the absorption of Splenda into the human body was studied on a grand total of six men! Based on that one human study, the FDA allowed the findings to be generalized as being representative of the entire human population. Including women, children, the elderly, and those with any chronic illness -- none of whom were ever examined.

The FDA claims they reviewed over 100 studies conducted on Splenda. What they don't tell you is that most of the studies were on animals. And, those animal studies reveal plenty of problems, such as:
Decreased red blood cells -- sign of anemia -- at levels above 1,500 mg/kg/day
Increased male infertility by interfering with sperm production and vitality, as well as brain lesions at higher doses
Enlarged and calcified kidneys (McNeil stated this is often seen with poorly absorbed substances and was of no toxicological significance. The FDA Final Rule agreed that these are findings that are common in aged female rats and are not significant.)
Spontaneous abortions in nearly half the rabbit population given sucralose, compared to zero aborted pregnancies in the control group
A 23 percent death rate in rabbits, compared to a 6 percent death rate in the control group
Chemically, Splenda is More Similar to DDT Than Sugar
Yes. Splenda bears more chemical similarity to DDT than it does to sugar.
Sucralose is in fact a synthetic chemical that was originally cooked up in a laboratory. It does start off as a sugar molecule. Then, in a five-step patented process of making sucralose, three chlorine molecules are added to a sucrose (sugar) molecule. The chemical process to make sucralose alters the chemical composition of the sugar so much that it is somehow converted to a fructo-galactose molecule.

This type of sugar molecule does not occur in nature, and therefore your body does not possess the ability to properly metabolize it. As a result of this "unique" biochemical make-up, McNeil Nutritionals makes its claim that Splenda is not digested or metabolized by the body, hence it has zero calories.

But, if you look at the research (which is primarily extrapolated form animal studies) you will see that in fact an average of 15 percent of sucralose IS absorbed into your digestive system, and according to this latest study, it is also absorbed into your fat cells.

Unfortunately, if you are healthy and your digestive system works well, you may be at HIGHER risk for breaking down this product in your stomach and intestines!

Your Healthiest Alternatives
If you have a craving for sweets, rather than trying to find "healthier" ways to continue indulging in them, it is in your best interest to learn ways to relieve your cravings.
The obvious one would be to stop eating any of the products to begin with. But sweets are powerfully addictive - sugar has even been shown to be more addictive than cocaine. Stevia is a preferable natural substitute, which can be used in making most dishes and drinks.
However, complete avoidance of sweets is often necessary to break your addictive cycle, as your hormones insulin and leptin likely play an important role in your cravings.
If you are unable to achieve abstinence from sweets, your emotional connection to cravings might be an important factor for you. One of the most profound methods I know of for diminishing the effects of food cravings is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). EFT is the psychological acupressure technique routinely used in my practice to help people reduce their cravings.

There is enough evidence showing the dangers of consuming artificial sweeteners to fill an entire book -- which is exactly why I wrote Sweet Deception. If you or your loved ones drink diet beverages or eat diet foods, this book will explain how you've been deceived about the truth behind artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose -- for greed, for profits ... and at the expense of your own health.

Eggs Deserve the BEST -
Professional Supplements ONLY Please - Part I

Okay Peeps, listen closely!

Some of you may be taking or considering taking vitamin supplements. To be sure, Amy and I wouldn't be enjoying our state of wellness without the supplements we take. But hear me now - this is some of the most important information I will ever impart upon you. You simply must pay attention! This topic is close to my heart and critical for you to understand.

I began my "natural" journey partly in nursing school. I found out quickly something quite sad about conventional medicine, but more importantly about my patients whose care I take VERY seriously. I am first and foremost my patients' advocate. I am their last line of defense in the hospital. What I do or do not do can have dire consequences for their health and well-being. I literally hold their lives in my hands.

What I discovered in my practice is something I almost hesitate to mention because it invokes fear. But it should not be news to you. I'm sure you've heard the news that up to 70,000 people lose their lives each year to medical mistakes. Scientific studies have proven this devastating fact. Thousands upon thousands have lost their lives or have been permanently harmed by medical errors, pharmaceuticals, or the adverse side effects of powerful prescription drugs - those very drugs the FDA "approved" and that make the pharmaceutical industry 200 BILLION DOLLARS in profits each year. And costs keep rising and rising fast.

I kept noticing people seemed to be getting SICKER not better! Why were my elderly patients on so many medications??? Were they really being helped? Were the physicians simply treating side effects and not the underlying cause of their problems? I was convinced that there was a better way and decided I wanted to practice "Wellcare" and not the traditional model of "Health Care" that we know of today in America.

When I began to have hypertension (high blood pressure), I wanted to try to heal myself naturally and stave off the possible inevitability of prescription medications. I knew I might need these important medications eventually but I wanted to try to heal naturally first. SO, my science brain went to work researching. If I was going to do this I didn't want to waste a dime of money or an ounce of energy taking ineffective stuff that didn't work. I wanted the good stuff. But who might know the BEST supplements to take? Well, at the time I was watching Dr. Phil and his Weight Loss Challenge. Not only is Dr. Phil a brilliant doctor, he is also the first to admit he's not always the utmost authority. When necessary he will FIND the experts to get him the outcome he desires. He is very competitive and wants his peeps to succeed! So I surfed around his site and found the company that treated his Challengers. I had to dig deep because he was not promoting them nor did he have any interest in this company. What I wanted and needed to see was the SCIENCE - the hardcore research that backed these products. When I inquired they informed me I needed a health care professional's referral. I told them I was a health care professional and they required I provide proof of my licensure. Once that happened I was allowed access to all their scientific studies and to their supplements as well. They were happy to share their knowledge, their experience and all that beautiful, irrefutable science! More about them later ...

Long story short(er) I went on their protocol for hypertension and my blood pressure improved in TWO WEEKS - and I mean dramatically improved! I couldn't believe it and had to keep rechecking to be sure. It may have happened even sooner but it was two weeks before I checked again. I was blown away. I learned that this company provides healthcare practitioners with highly effective supplements based first and foremost on scientific evidence and meticulous research. They are guaranteed safe and and backed by proof of their efficacy. IOW, they work, they work well, and they work fast.

On another blog I will expand upon this topic because there are many, MANY reasons to choose a professional brand. But for now I want you to consider what I've said. Myself and your Hatched Egg Amy are living proof of the superior results of professional products. Pharmaceutical grade nutrients, or "neutraceuticals" are what I will always recommend and use to treat my clients. The most expensive supplement you will ever buy is one that doesn't work!
To your wellness,
Patrice

**Side note from Amy: One day during a doctor visit I handed my Dr. a list of all my supplements. She was very happy. I told her my family thought I lost my mind. Her reply was "Think of all the copays and deductibles you save every year & you are so healthy". What a great stamp of approval & validation for the cost of my supplements. They have truly saved my life.

The Change is Amazing!

I admit it I don't stit still very well. Ever since the Anxiety & Panic took hold of me I have been a busy girl. Seemed to help me keep the anxiety at bay. Now that I am better it's just a habit that stuck. My family and friends think it's kinda funny, I am years behind on movies.

Yesterday my family was recovering from a week of feeling pretty yucky. The house was quiet and I decided to just relax and check out what was on TV. There was not much on TV, but I came across a World War II movie called U-571. Not that this movie is of any importance, except I have not watched any movies with the slightest vilolence for over five years. It would have been an instant panic attack, not to mention on my mind for days.

My husband walked by the beadroom and stopped in his tracks. I think he peeked in to see if I was asleep. He said "What are you watching"? I said "Oh, U-571 it's about WWII". His reply was " Yeah, I know - it's been a long time since you watched something like that". I sat and thought about it. I was really enjoying this movie & was calm as could be. What an achievement!

My point to this story is that if you are stuggling as bad as I was - it can change! I gave up all medical shows, all law shows, all magazine shows, and the news. They freaked me out & no one understood. I was just different, and I missed a lot of fun.

If you are discouraged, don't be. It's all about taking your time, baby steps, and pushing your comfort zone when you feel better. Don't rush it or you will end up taking steps backward.

Tonight I will be making this in my journal as a big step for me. Yippeee!

I'm here to celebrate your small achievements too! Make sure you email me or post them in our forum.

Wishing you a happy tomorrow,
Amy

Have a Good Laugh

We have long heard that laughter is the best medicine, science is now backing up that claim. Research shows that there is a cortisol reaction that causes an increase in production of endorphins when we are smiling and laughing. Laughter causes other beneficial physical changes such as improved circulation, stimulation of the nervous system, heightened immune system, and making the heart stronger.

Did you know that adults laugh 15 times per day, but children laugh 400 times per day. Do you often wish you could feel like you did when you were a child? I know I do, maybe this is why we were so much happier.Find something funny to laugh at today.

Wishing you a happy tomorrow,
Amy

Are You Getting Enough Sleep

Unless you still live with your mom, chances are you are not asked that question much. With stress, anxiety and families sometimes it's hard to get a good night's sleep.

Working towards getting a full eights hours of sleep can be a difficult task. If your day is like mine it's full of more to-dos than time will allow. I have thought about all the things I could do if I didn't have to sleep. I would hate to think of what shape I would be in.

A few years ago it was another story. I tried everything to get to sleep, but that was my hardest time of the night. I could feel the fear creep in as the sun went down. Most of my panic attacks happened around 11pm at night. It took me a long time to develop a routine that made me feel relaxed and secure. If you are suffering with bedtime, routine is the way to go. Find out what makes you happy & the hour before bed becomes your time. Funny TV Show, warm bath, cozy PJ's, gratitude journal, smelly lotion, nice sheets, herbal tea. Make that hour all yours. If you keep the routine the same every night your body begins to relax as you finish your routine. If you have children you know how this worked for them when they were very small.

Remember you are a delicate egg, you need your rest to balance those hormones and strengthen your body. I care about you and want you to feel great!

I will see if Patrice can fill us in on Melatonin the natural supplement that aids sleep. It has worked great for many. I will send that out soon.

I am off to start my bedtime routine. Get some rest!

Wishing you a happy tomorrow,
Amy

The Hatching of a Chick

Have you ever had a vision of something great to come?
It happened to me a few years ago.

I have been asked to explain "The Hatched Egg" for sometime. Where it came from and the meaning behind it.

The truth is that I ran across the picture of the egg and had a flash that that was what I needed to name my business. At the time I was still deep in the grips of anxiety and panic. The egg image was posted on my bedroom mirror while I was searching for a meaning. Everyday I was searching in my mind of what type of business "The Hatched Egg" would be. I had no ideas, just a deep gut that someday it would all come together.

A few years ago talking with my dear friends Patrice (Hatch into Health) & Daniela, I told them I was given the anxiety for a reason. I had no idea how, but I knew one day I would be free. I could see myself living free. That's what the Egg represented to me. Something very fragile that ultimately becomes so strong that it can break free of its surroundings.

Earlier last year when I was celebrating the fact that I had remained panic and anxiety free for one year it hit me. Some call it the voice in your head, others call it the voice of God. I do know that a fire was placed in me to share my story and help others as I wished I had been helped.

So here I am. Free of all those terrible feelings, excited to wake-up everyday. I have a mission & a purpose. The right people just keep showing up to help us. I am driven to help everyone I can, it was a promise I made. If I found a way out, I would help everyone I could.

There is hope, there is freedom. You are destined for something great.

Wishing you the best,
Your Chick - Amy

Feeling Alone?

It is so hard to go through the journey to freedom feeling like your all alone. You might be frightened about these experiences you have had. Worried that your not feeling better, or maybe going crazy.

I just want you to know that you have a friend, lots of friends who know how you are feeling. We are here to validate your feelings & to be a part of your journey.

The most important part is you, you have to want to feel better. You have to want a better way of living. That means today you have to move yourself to the top of the list. Start taking care of yourself. Remember the old saying "If you don't take care of yourself, you can't care for anyone else".

Just know I am cheering you on. Please take care of yourself and know that is your path to freedom.

Take a "Time Out"

We all need to find time away from the noise in our lives. If we want to heal our brain we need to send ourselves to "time out".

This isn't the disciplinary time out, but a calm and relaxing time out. We all know that we need to try and carve out at least 10 minutes a day for relaxation, prayer, or time for you. However, this is a little bit different. This is all about silencing your mind.

We talked last week about finding a time to be connected and in the moment. Block out that self-talk that goes on in your head. This is actually lying very still, breathing very deep and thinking about Nothing! My day is very busy and loud, so my time out is as I am going to sleep. I first practice my visualization of where I am headed/want to be - then I send myself to time out. It can be a few minutes or an hour, whatever works for you. While lying on your back make sure you are taking those controlled deep breaths, close your eyes. This is the hard part, no self-talk. Self-Talk is the voice in your head, pictures streaming through. I visualize a black wall, if anything comes through it is pushed out just as quickly. Focus completely on your breathing. You could compare this to being in a meditative state.

This is a great way for you to adjust your focus, reduce those symptoms & kick-start the relaxation response in your body. Also helps if you are having a hard time falling asleep.

Let me know how you are doing with your "Time Out".

Wishing you peaceful thoughts,

Amy

All About Eggs

I've been thinking about hatching and about eggs. An egg is a protective shell that protects the embryo and houses its nutrients. Well then, how magnificent is the EGG? I just love the idea of hatching and emerging from something that also provides nourishment and protection. I just love Hatching Eggs! And eggs are even more special than you may know.

The egg is often referred to as nature's most perfect food. Why is that? I was taught this over and over in my training. Because it is considered a complete protein. Very few foods qualify as a complete protein. A protein is "complete" if it contains all 9 amino acids needed for growth and repair of the body's tissues. Complete proteins come from animal sources such as meat and dairy. I believe the egg is underrated and under-consumed. The egg got a bad rap in the past from some erroneous research that got published regarding dietary cholesterol. The media jumped all over this to sell papers and play like Chicken Little. Yes, eggs contain cholesterol. But dietary cholesterol is not believed to elevate blood cholesterol as is was once thought. More confusion again. Regardless of that bad information, we absolutely MUST HAVE cholesterol or we will die. This is a fact. The patients I nurse with the lowest cholesterol look SO sick!! When it comes to cholesterol, lower is NOT neccesarily better. But I digress.

Cholesterol is manufactured by the body and is absolutely essential (like the 9 essential amino acids found in the egg) for hormone production and many other functions. Unless you are allergic there is no reason not to consume eggs regularly. One of the reasons I love them so much is their simplicity and versatility. They can be boiled ahead of time, peeled when warm, and stored in the fridge for a quick grab, high protein, low carb snack. I also love to make mini quiche muffins in large batches and keep them in the fridge and freezer. Eggs freeze great! Can be reheated from cold or frozen state so easily and eaten on the go. You can add anything and everything to them. I love to add spinach, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, you get the idea!
To make the perfect boiled egg: place eggs in saucepan and cover with water. If possible pierce them first with egg piercer (I adore my egg piercer). Add a splash of vinegar to the water for easier peeling. Bring to a boil, remove from heat and cover with lid. Set timer for 16-18 min.s. Run cool water over the eggs and peel while warm. This method gives me tender, near perfect eggs every time. Even better is starting with room temperature eggs but I don't have the patience or forethought for that!

Check out thehatchedegg.com for my mini quiche recipe.

So, while you're hatching, eat more eggs!

Wishing you wellness,
Patrice

It's a Sugar Overload!

Tonight my husband and his friends are all glued to the TV watching the Superbowl. We have three men on the couch, and enough food to feed twenty. They have always been this way. They think about their Superbowl food for weeks ahead.

As for me I have walked through the house nibbling a cookie, some chips, some cake. I have hit the sugar overload. It makes me feel sluggish and just rotten. It has been a while since I have had sugar. It really increases my anxious/nervous feelings.

When I finish tonight's message I am heading into the kitchen to pack a healthy lunch for tomorrow, and when they leave the sugar will too. I need to learn to just say no, because I can't just have a little.

In the last 20 years, sugar consumption in the U.S. has risen from 26 pounds to 135 lbs. of sugar per person per year! That is shocking!

When surfing around about this subject tonight I found this list of 144 things sugar does to your body. http://www.nancyappleton.com/NA144reasons.html Don't Panic! I don't want you to worry, but be informed. This is sugar in excess, but I am now going to put the cookie down.

Tomorrow morning I will go back to eating clean. I think I am going to ask for a dozen carrots for Valentine's Day this year!

Will you join me in kicking the sugar out of our diet? We will feel a lot better & our future will be better!

Wishing you peaceful thoughts today,
Amy
